Background of the Study
Physical activity has been widely documented as a key factor in enhancing cognitive functions, including concentration and attention span. In Maiduguri Local Government Area, Borno State, concerns about academic performance and classroom engagement have prompted educators to consider the potential benefits of integrating physical activity into daily routines. Many studies have highlighted that regular physical exercise can lead to improved brain function by increasing blood flow and stimulating neurochemical processes, which in turn enhance concentration levels (Adamu, 2023). Within this framework, schools have begun exploring ways to incorporate physical activity into the academic schedule, recognizing that the benefits extend beyond physical health to include cognitive and academic performance.
In many educational settings, especially in regions like Maiduguri where external challenges such as security and resource limitations are prevalent, the need for innovative educational strategies is paramount. Integrating short bursts of physical activity during or before classes can serve as a catalyst for improved concentration and classroom behavior. For instance, dynamic warm-up exercises, stretching routines, or brief physical games have been shown to reduce restlessness and increase alertness among students (Bello, 2024). These findings are particularly relevant in environments where students may experience high levels of stress or distraction, potentially undermining their academic performance.
Furthermore, physical activity has been linked to improved mood and reduced anxiety, factors that are critical for maintaining focus in academic settings. When students engage in regular exercise, they are more likely to experience enhanced mental clarity and a reduction in symptoms of depression and anxiety. This, in turn, creates a more conducive environment for learning and active participation in class discussions (Ibrahim, 2025). Additionally, the incorporation of physical activity within the school day promotes social interaction and teamwork, further contributing to a supportive learning atmosphere. By establishing a routine that includes physical movement, schools in Maiduguri can address not only the physical but also the psychological barriers to effective learning.
The current study is designed to investigate how structured physical activity interventions impact students’ ability to concentrate in class, taking into account the unique challenges faced by schools in Maiduguri. Through an in-depth analysis of classroom behavior, academic performance, and student feedback, the research aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating physical activity into educational settings. This holistic approach to education acknowledges that physical wellbeing and academic success are deeply intertwined, particularly in contexts that demand resilience and adaptability (Usman, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
In Maiduguri Local Government Area, Borno State, persistent challenges in classroom concentration and academic performance have raised concerns among educators and policymakers. Despite the recognition that physical activity can enhance cognitive functions, many schools continue to struggle with integrating effective exercise routines into the daily academic schedule. This failure to incorporate physical activity as a tool for improving concentration has resulted in classrooms where students often exhibit signs of restlessness, reduced attention spans, and diminished academic performance (Yusuf, 2023).
Several factors contribute to this problem. First, there is a lack of structured programs that systematically integrate physical activity into the curriculum. Many schools rely solely on traditional teaching methods without incorporating breaks or activities that stimulate physical movement. Additionally, inadequate teacher training in the benefits and implementation of physical activity further limits its application as a pedagogical tool. This gap in teacher preparedness exacerbates the issue, leaving students without the necessary stimulation to maintain focus during lessons (Hassan, 2024).
Furthermore, external factors such as socio-economic challenges and security concerns in Maiduguri create an environment where academic priorities often overshadow innovative approaches to learning. In this context, physical activity is sometimes viewed as an optional extra rather than an integral component of the educational process. Consequently, students do not receive the holistic support needed to optimize their cognitive functioning and classroom engagement. The lack of empirical data on the direct impact of physical activity on concentration in this region further complicates the development of targeted interventions. This study seeks to address these issues by systematically evaluating the effects of physical activity on students’ ability to concentrate, thereby providing evidence that could support curriculum changes and improved teaching strategies (Suleiman, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the impact of regular physical activity on students’ concentration levels in class.
To assess the relationship between classroom exercise routines and academic performance.
To develop recommendations for integrating physical activity into the school curriculum to enhance concentration.
Research Questions
How does regular physical activity affect students’ concentration in class?
What is the relationship between structured exercise routines and academic performance?
What strategies can be implemented to effectively incorporate physical activity into daily classroom routines?
Research Hypotheses
Regular physical activity significantly improves students’ ability to concentrate in class.
There is a positive correlation between classroom exercise routines and academic performance.
Implementation of structured physical activity programs leads to measurable improvements in student focus and engagement.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the relationship between physical activity and classroom concentration among students in Maiduguri. The findings will inform educators and policymakers about the benefits of integrating physical exercise into the curriculum, potentially leading to improved academic performance and overall student wellbeing. The research may also serve as a model for other regions facing similar challenges, contributing to broader educational reforms that emphasize holistic student development (Abdulkadir, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to investigating the effect of physical activity on students’ ability to concentrate in class in Maiduguri Local Government Area, Borno State. It does not extend to other academic subjects or age groups outside the targeted student population.
